What is an Asian Handicap?
An Asian handicap gives one team a head start or a deficit in goals, and — crucially — removes the draw from the equation. Instead of three outcomes there are two, so the stake is split across a narrower market. Bookmakers price these lines tightly, which usually makes them the cheapest way to back a team.
Settlement is simple once you see it as arithmetic: add the handicap to the goal difference from your team's point of view. Positive is a win, negative is a loss, exactly zero is a push.

Quarter Lines
Any handicap ending in .25 or .75 is not one bet but two: half the stake goes on each of the nearest half-point lines. That is why these lines can produce a half win or a half loss, outcomes that do not exist anywhere else in betting.
Take −0.75 with a ₦1,000 stake at odds of 1.95, on a team that wins by one goal:
- ₦500 on −0.5: adjusted result +0.5, a win — returns ₦975
- ₦500 on −1.0: adjusted result 0, a push — returns ₦500
- Total back: ₦1,475, a profit of ₦475 instead of the ₦950 a full win would pay

Reading the Sign
A negative handicap means your team is giving a start — they must win by more than the number. A positive one means they are receiving it, so they can lose narrowly and the bet still pays. Enter the goal difference from your team's side above: +1 if they won by one, −2 if they lost by two.

What does a −0.75 handicap mean?
It splits your stake between −0.5 and −1.0. Win by two or more and both halves win. Win by exactly one and the −0.5 half wins while the −1.0 half is a push, so you collect half the profit and half the stake back — a half win. Draw or lose and both halves lose.
When is the stake returned on an Asian handicap?
When the adjusted result is exactly zero, which only happens on whole-number handicaps — 0, −1, +2 and so on. Back a team at −1 and they win by exactly one goal, and the bet is a push: your stake comes back with no profit or loss. Half-point handicaps can never push, which is their whole purpose.
Why bet an Asian handicap instead of 1X2?
It removes the draw, so the stake is split across two outcomes rather than three. That means shorter but more frequent wins, and markedly lower bookmaker margins — Asian lines are usually the cheapest way to back a team, which is why they are the default in sharp markets.
How do I choose between −0.5 and −0.75?
By how much you dislike the one-goal win. At −0.5 a one-goal win pays in full; at −0.75 it pays half; at −1.0 it pushes. The quarter line is the compromise — you take a lower price than −1.0 for the guarantee of getting something back from a narrow win.
