₦12,903.23

Total staked

₦17,903.23

If hedge wins

+₦2,096.77

Staking ₦12,903.23 on the other side locks in +₦2,096.77 whichever way the event goes. Leaving the bet open risks −₦5,000.00 for a shot at +₦15,000.00.

What is Hedging?

Hedging means placing a second bet on the opposite outcome of a position you already hold, sized so that you end up with the same result either way. It is not a way to make money — it is a way to stop caring how the event ends.

The classic case is an accumulator down to its last leg. Four selections have landed, one match remains, and the bet is worth far more than you would normally risk on a single result. Backing the other side turns a coin-flip into a certain payout.

The Formula

  • Hedge stake for equal profit: S₂ = (S₁ × O₁) ÷ O₂
  • Guaranteed profit: (S₁ × O₁) − (S₁ + S₂)

S₁ and O₁ are the original stake and price; O₂ is the current price on the opposite outcome. The first term is simply what the open bet pays if it wins — the hedge has to return the same.

Example: the Last Leg of an Acca

You staked ₦5,000 on a four-fold that is now down to one match, with the whole bet priced at 4.00 — a ₦20,000 return if it lands. The opposite result is available at 1.55.

  • Hedge stake: ₦20,000 ÷ 1.55 = ₦12,903.23
  • Total staked: ₦5,000 + ₦12,903.23 = ₦17,903.23
  • Return either way: ₦20,000
  • Locked profit: ₦2,096.77

Compare that with letting it ride: ₦15,000 profit if it wins, ₦5,000 lost if it does not. Hedging trades most of the upside for certainty. Whether that is worth it is a question about your bankroll, not about the odds.

When Hedging Makes Sense

  • The position has grown large. If the open bet is now worth several times your usual stake, the variance matters more than the small edge you give up.
  • The price has moved your way. Back a team at 5.00, watch them go 1.50 favourites, and hedging locks in the difference regardless of the result.
  • Something has changed. An injury or a red card after you bet is information you did not have; hedging is how you act on it.

It makes least sense as a habit. Hedging every position bleeds margin twice over and will turn a marginal edge into a losing strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I hedge the last leg of an accumulator?

It depends on the size of the position relative to your bankroll, not on the maths. Hedging costs you expected value — you are paying the bookmaker’s margin a second time — but it converts a large all-or-nothing swing into a certain result. If losing the open bet would genuinely hurt, hedge. If the stake is routine for you, letting it run is the higher-value play.

How do I work out the hedge stake?

Take what the open bet returns if it wins and divide by the opposite price: S2 = (S1 × O1) ÷ O2. That makes both outcomes return the same amount, so your profit is fixed. Guaranteed profit is then (S1 × O1) − (S1 + S2).

Can I hedge only part of the position?

Yes, and it is often the sensible middle ground. Switch to "Fixed amount" and enter a smaller hedge: you keep some upside if the original bet wins while cutting the downside. The calculator shows the profit in both scenarios so you can pick the balance you want.

Does hedging lose money on average?

Yes. Both sides carry the bookmaker’s margin, so a hedged position returns slightly less than the open bet was worth. Hedging buys certainty, and the margin is the price. That is a reasonable trade when the sum at stake is large relative to your bankroll and a poor one when it is not.
